Hanhai Studio hosts US-China film Co-production and the Globalization of Chinese Films Panel in 6th Beijing International Film Festival

On April 19th, Hanhai Studio, Shenzhen Youth Innovation and Entrepreneurship Community and Chinese Film Alliance hosted US-China Film Co-production and Investment Panel at Beijing International Hotel.

 

Associate counsel of SARFT, deputy secretary general of Beijing International Film Festival Committee Jianguo Bian, Assistant Director of Beijing State-owned Cultural Assets Supervision and Administration Office Yonghong Gu, Deputy District Mayor of Huairou District Wujun Ren all attended the panel, which is supported by Huairou District government, Beijing International Film Festival Committee, Beijing state-owned cultural assets supervision and administration office and Xinhua Mobile TV. With the theme of “Creativity without boundaries”, panelist had deep discussions on successful US-China co-productions, the trendiest topics on film investment, cross-border collaboration and the globalization of Chinese films.

In this panel, hosts and guests launched “China (Huairou) Film and Television Production Demonstration Area Los Angeles Introduction Platform”, accelerating the process of globalization of Chinese films. There are more than 400 companies located in Huairou Film Base, including Bona Film Group, China Film Corporate Digital Production Base and Guanghua Film Center.  Over 2000 movies have been filmed there, such as Monster Hunter, The Founding of a Republic, Mojin: The Lost Legend, Great Wall and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny. Hanhai Studio’s collaboration with Huairou District will promote the communication between Chinese film industry and Hollywood, introducing Chinese films to the world.

The panel consists of two sub-panels. The first one is “US-China film co-production and investment”, monitored by Peng Zhao, Chief Editor of CNC and President of Xinhua Mobile TV. Rob Minkoff, director of Lion King, Bennett Pozil, Executive VP of East West Bank, Tom Ara, Partner of Greenberg & Traurig, LLP, April Ye, President of Film Finance China, Yuqing Zhu, president of Juyinghui, and Kelly Zhang, COO of Hanhai Studio attended as panelists. Bennett Pozil mentions that East West Bank started back in 2011, knowing that they were going to lend in RMB [Renminbi] for film projects. “Our mission was to find Chinese-language product, through the Chinese distribution system,” says Pozil.

The second sub-panel is “Globalization of Chinese Films”. President of Chinese Film Alliance Hong Mei will be the host. Panelists include former Chairman of Hong Kong Film Awards Manfred Wong, Chairman of Chinese American Film Festival James Su, Executive Chairman of Canada China International Film Festival Miao Song, Founder and CEO of New York Chinese Film Festival Kaijie Wang,Chairman of China Image Film Festival Zhendan Jia and award-winning film producer Max Wang.  Guests share and discuss how to promote the globalization of Chinese films through US-China co-production.

Beijing International Film Festival (BJIFF), established in 2011, is a large-sized film activity sponsored by the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People’s Republic of China and the People’s Government of Beijing Municipality. BJIFF takes “Share the Screen, Shape the Future” as the keynote, aims at internationalization, professionalization, innovation & high-end, and marketization, and strives to build up a platform for promoting the Chinese film industry and enhance the Sino-overseas film exchange, transaction and cooperation.”It’s about time China connects its creative production and technology with Hollywood,” says Hanguang Wang, chairman of Hanhai Holdings Investment Management Group. “Hanhai Studio’s collaboration with Beijing International Film Festival will introduce China’s rich history and culture to the West, especially Hollywood, and promote Hollywood film in China. Hanhai Studio hosts “Night of Beijing-Hollywood” Social Mixer

Over 100 executives from top Chinese and American entertainment companies gathered at Duke Gui’s Palace in Beijing, a rare traditional Chinese residence on April 18th for a social mixer evening hosted by Hanhai Studio, China’s first incubator for creative production and technology.

Executives from US and Chinese companies utilized the platform Hanhai Studio provides to connect, communicate and collaborate with each other with mutual interests.  This event was supported by Beijing Huairou District Government, Beijing International Film Festival Committee, Beijing State-owned Cultural Assets Management Office and Xinhua Mobile TV. Approximately ten film investment were introduced to guests at the social mixer.

Other distinguished guests included Vice President of China Federation of Industry Jun Fu, Former Vice Minister of Health Xizhao Dou, Director of Board oof Hanergy Group, President of Hollyhigh Investment Group Mingjian Chen, President of Stellar Megamedia Bin Hao and President of Winta Group Shuigun Chen. President of Hanhai Holdings Investment Management Group Hanguang Wang performed calligraphy and presented it to foreign guests.

Hanguang Wang said:” Hanhai Studio’s collaboration with Beijing International Film Festival will introduce China’s rich history and culture to the West, especially Hollywood, and promote Hollywood film in China. It is a great effort to promote the communication between both countries. “

Former Chinese Cultural Consulate in Los Angeles Zhaohe Che also attended the social mixer. He said:” China has a long history. The Disney film Mulan was based on a Chinese story. Once the gap between Eastern and Western cultures is shortened, China’s box office and rich cultural resources will definitely surprise Hollywood.”

Director of Lion King Rob Minkoff talked about the prospect of US-China Co-production:” We can see that Hollywood and China is developing a co-operation relationship, and China’s determination is very strong.” Chairman and CEO of Reel FX Steve O’Brian said:” I am now co-operating with Hanhai Studio, a creative production and technology incubator. A lot of Chinese and Hollywood film production have settled in their building in Burbank, which shows the trend that Chinese film companies are going abroad intensively.”

Chinese film industry has experienced enormous development in recent years. Chinese companies start to invest in Hollywood films and make US-China co-productions. “Night of Beijing-Hollywood” Social Mixer provides an excellent opportunity for US-China filmmakers and investors’ deep conversations. Hanhai Studio’s effort of connecting senior executives from top US-China entertainment companies lays a solid ground for future US-China film co-production.

The 6th Beijing International Film Festival Kicks off with a Grand Opening on April 16

The opening ceremony of the 6th Beijing International Film Festival was held at Beijing Yanqi Lake International Convention & Exhibition Center on April 16, 2016.

The grand opening followed four parts, “to films”, “to Beijing”, “to times”, and “to audience”. With film narration and the stage full of stories as its creation principles, the opening event combined song & dance performances with ritual ceremony and accomplish many processes including dramatic poses of seven judges and the film production team of the opening ceremony, the address of the chairman of the judge, and recommendation of 15 shortlisted film for the festival, etc.

Hanhai Studio, the first Chinese creative production and technology incubator in the US has a close relationship with Huairou District, where the opening ceremony was held. Last November, Hanhai Studio invited the delegation from Huairou Government to visit Burbank and meet with the City Manager Mark Scott and Manager Assistant Justin Hess. They talked about how to build up the friendship cities relationship between Huairou and Burbank can promote US-China cooperation in creative industries.

Vice District Director of Huairou Junwu Ren said, Burbank is “The Media Capital of the World”, home to many world famous studios and media companies.  As the “Capital of Films in China”, large film companies in China are all located in Huariou district. The co-operation of these two cities could bring success and unlimited opportunities.

In 2016, Hanhai Studio plans to co-host the international promotion event of Huairou’s film and television industry, helping Huairou go abroad.  Huairou Film Base has already established a comprehensive business chain, from filming, post-production to tourism and training. Hanhai Studio is experienced in developing cross-border cultural creative projects. Their collaboration will boost Chinese film industry.

Since six years ago when the first session of Beijing International Film Festival began, this festival has undergone a development track toward “Masters, Mass, and Market”, thus now boasting a bigger circle of friends, being noticed and remembered gradually by the public, and realizing more and more movie dreams. Hanhai Studio will host US-China Film Co-production and Investment Panel and “Night of Beijing Hollywood” Social Mixer with the support of Huairou District Government, promoting the communication and collaboration between China cultural creative companies and Hollywood.
