Hanhai Studio’s 2017 Cross-Border Acceleration Program Brings 10 Startups to China

Written by Rob Yen

Burbank, CA (June 1, 2017) – From May 10-19, Hanhai Studio’s Cross-Border Acceleration Program successfully introduced 10 startups to the Chinese market through pitch opportunities, roadshows, partner tours, and cultural innovation events throughout five major cities: Chengdu, Shenzhen, Beijing, Tianjin, and Hangzhou.

The dynamic startups – from various areas including Silicon Valley, Los Angeles and New York – began the tour in Chengdu to attend the 2017 Global Business Incubation Summit. Held at a brand-new, architecturally-designed building in the industrial area of the city, they witnessed first-hand the rapid rise of the technology sector.

At the event, these entrepreneurs had their first opportunity to pitch to an audience of investors and various resources, with the hope of establishing valuable connections in the city. Afterwards, they toured the industrial parks and enjoyed other cultural activities such as having a traditional hot pot dinner as well as visit the world-renowned Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding.

The group then traveled to Shenzhen, where they toured the global headquarters of one of the largest tech companies in the world, Tencent. There, they met with representatives from the tech giant and introduced their respective startups to set up future discussions on what their needs may be in China.

Afterwards, the group headed to the country’s capital of Beijing, where they were introduced to more pitch opportunities at various innovation development zones throughout the massive city. While in Beijing, the group visited the headquarters of Hanhai International at the modern and expansive Galaxy SOHO building in downtown.

Dinner was held at a historic, 1,200+ year-old restaurant nestled within the city streets, where attendees feasted on an impressive spread of traditional Beijing delicacies like Peking Duck, slow roasted crispy prawns, and pickled cucumbers. With a couple of hours of free time that evening, the group visited Tiananmen Square to experience the sprawling city landmark under bright lights.

From Beijing, the group headed to a newly-developed eco-city area of Tianjin. Once there, they visited an incubation complex and learned that the entire area was developed in only seven years, a testament to the investment that the city is making towards innovation and technology development.

The last stop of the trip was to Hangzhou, the capital of China’s Zhejiang Province in the east, also known as the home to one of the largest tech companies in the world, Alibaba Group. The startups toured the campus and met with representatives from the company, where they received a presentation on some of the company’s current projects.

After, they attended an event hosted by the Enjoyor Incubator, which included their last pitching opportunity to potential investors. The evening concluded with a dinner at the West Lake area, one of the most famous and scenic attractions of the city.

As the tour drew to a close, and the entrepreneurs parted their separate ways, opportunities from the trip are still forthcoming. Providing valuable networking opportunities with investors and resources in a country that is dedicated to promote growth in innovation and technology are the goals of the cross-border acceleration program. Going forward, Hanhai Studio will help bridge the US-China relationship of such resources and opportunities to help pave the way for further expansion and development.

Hollywood Entertainment Technology Festival

Hollywood, Calif. (December 1, 2016) — Hanhai Studios—a creative production and technology incubator—and The Los Angeles Film School have joined forces to host the first Hollywood Entertainment Technology Festival (HETF).  The event took place on December 1, 2016 at the Los Angeles Film School and is the first of its kind connecting Hollywood and China.

Change calls for innovation, and innovation drives progress. In recent years, the Chinese entertainment market has been growing rapidly.  Many investors from China are willing to invest in Hollywood movies, and many filmmakers want to do co-productions.  Both China and the U.S. have been actively pressing ahead with multi-lateral international cooperation in different fields, and building an enabling innovation cooperation network.

With these considerations in mind, Hanhai Studio and the Los Angeles Film School decided to jointly host the first Hollywood Entertainment Technology Festival. HETF is one of the first international events attempting to connect China and the U.S., with the core concept of introducing today’s latest entertainment technology and highlighting the benefits of cross-border investment. Closely focusing on the theme of “Creativity without Boundary,” HETF created a platform for industry experts, entrepreneurs, and venture capitalists to come together for potential projects and ground-breaking collaborations.

“It’s an exciting time in our industry,” said Diana Derycz-Kessler, president and CEO of The Los Angeles Film School, “and we are proud to be working with Hanhai Studios to bring this innovative event to our campus and the greater Los Angeles community. The ties between Hollywood and China are expected to grow in the future, and the Los Angeles Film School is looking forward to future cross-cultural collaborations. Being a part of this international business movement will benefit our students both here and abroad.”

Over 30 entertainment and technology companies and venture funds gathered for three panels followed by a VIP cocktail party to discuss the latest industry trends and advancements. This year’s panels include:

·      “Global Innovation and Co-Production of Entertainment Technology”

·       “Technology and Transmedia in Hollywood Today”

·       “U.S.-China Cross-Border Entrepreneurship and Investment”

Each panel addressed the present and future of entertainment technology in the U.S. and China and included keynotes from leading experts in technology and entertainment. Some of this year’s speakers include Zvi Greenstein, general manager of NVIDIA; Max Epstein, vice president of content strategy at DMG Entertainment; Michael Tsang, regional general manager of Alibaba Cloud; Houston Howard, professor at The Los Angeles Film School, and many others.

Additionally as part of HETF, an HH&E Startup Competition was held in the afternoon. Over 200 start-ups participated in the initial stages of the competition. Renowned investment companies and incubators such as Eagles Fund, Zuma Ventures, Blue Angeles Investment Community, Idealab and Amino Capital join the competition as judges. 10 finalists from Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, Boston, Vancouver, Beijing and Shenzhen pitched to judges and investors from China and the U.S. live on stage to win hundreds of thousands of dollars in equity investment. Danish startup company Rokoko Smartsuit Pro won the first prize. AR/VR social platform CLEVR and Lumin.ai won the second prize. Titanium Falcon won the third prize.

In addition, Hanhai International and Enjoyor Incubator will host the Strategic Co-operation Launch Ceremony together during HETF.  Hanhai International and Enjoyor Incubator intend to collaborate deeply, hand-in-hand, to start a global innovative and entrepreneurial accelerating network based on vertical industry and giving wings to help small and medium-sized companies to realize their international dreams and take off through the profound practice of “incubation + investment + cross-border acceleration” in a comprehensive system.  Hanhai International and Enjoyor Incubator would also boost Chinese and foreign enterprises with a zero-distance partnership in technology, capital and marketing, building a new global collaboration in a win-win era.

HETF is co-organized by HH&E Venture, Beijing Film Academy Film and Cultural Creative Park, Alibaba Cloud and other US-China companies. It is supported by the Beijing Huairou District Government, Bay Area Council and the Beijing State-Owned Cultural Assets Management Office.

Hanhai Studio, the Los Angeles Introduction platform for the China (Huairou) Film and Television Production Demonstration Area, is accelerating the process of globalization of Chinese films through close connections with Hollywood. There are more than 400 companies located in the Huairou Film Base, including Bona Film Group, the China Film Corporate Digital Production Base, and Guanghua Film Center.  Over 2000 movies have been filmed there, such as Monster Hunt, The Founding of a Republic, Mojin: The Lost Legend, Great Wall and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny.  Hanhai Studio’s collaboration with Huairou District will promote the communication between the Chinese film industry and Hollywood, introducing Chinese films to the world.

In the cocktail party, Deputy Consul-General of China in Los Angeles Lei Wang and Chairman of US Chinese Education Foundation Wen Shao gave speeches. Hanguang Wang then performed calligraphy.

“Hanhai Studios has held hundreds of events, incubated over 20 start-up companies and developed channels with Hollywood studios, film schools, independent production companies and individuals to connect with China,” said Kelly Zhang, chief operating officer of Hanhai Studio. “The Hollywood Entertainment Technology Festival is an incredible next step in our overall mission to bring China and Hollywood closer together, and we’re honored to be hosting it with The Los Angeles Film School, a well-known staple in the entertainment industry.”

The world leader in visual computing NVIDIA joins Hollywood Entertainment Technology Festival

Hanhai Studio and The Los Angeles Film School will together host the first annual Hollywood Entertainment Technology Festival on December 1, 2016.

The General Manager of visual computing leader NVIDIA, Zvi Greenstein, is now confirmed to join the festival as a panelist.  He will participate in a deep discussion on the most cutting-edge film entertainment topics with senior management and seasoned experts in the entertainment technology industry.

NVIDIA is an American technology company based in Santa Clara, California, established in January 1993.   NVIDIA designs graphics processing units for the gaming market, as well as systems on chip units for the mobile computing and automotive market.  For more than two decades, NVIDIA has pioneered visual computing, the art and science of computer graphics.  Their work is at the center of the most consequential mega-trends in technology—virtual reality, artificial intelligence and self-driving cars.

Zvi Greenstein is the general manager of NVIDIA.  He has served for ten years at AMD as senior director of product management and business development.  Zvi is now General Manager in the GeForce Group, heading business development for Virtual Reality at NVIDIA.

There is more and more utilization of high-tech in the entertainment industry in recent years.  On one hand, traditional film companies such as Sony, 20th Century Fox, DMG Entertainment, Universal and Disney have started to venture into virtual reality, games and online publishing.  On the other hand, high-tech giants are also expanding their film and television, literature and animation lines.  They are trying to build a comprehensive business chain by crossover collaboration, linking content and channels together.

Hanhai Studio will host the Hollywood Entertainment Technology Festival in December.  We will invite US-China experienced scholars, investors and entrepreneurs in the film and technology industry to engage in comprehensive discussions on the most up-to-date topics. We aim to create a communication platform for US-China film-tech companies and to bring more new products and ideas to the marketplace.

During the Hollywood Entertainment Technology Festival, Hanhai Studio will host the 1st Entertainment Technology start-up competition.  Well-known fund management companies will invest in the winners of the competition.

We welcome start-ups in the industry of entertainment technology, artificial intelligence, big data and new material to participate in our competition. Please email your business proposals to contact@hanhaistudio.com.  Thank you!
