LeTraining Education Group Delegation visits Hanhai Studio

In recent years with the development of the Internet, more and more small and medium-sized Chinese enterprises want to expand overseas markets.  These enterprises are seeking foreign talent, techniques and marketing tactics, with the intention of transformation.

On the afternoon of June 8th, a delegation from LeTraining Education Group, consisting of private enterprise owners, visited Hanhai Studio and had a discussion on the start-up ecosystem in Los Angeles with Lucy Liu, CEO of Hanhai Studio.

The delegation members are in the industries of home furnishings, construction design, private equity and equity investment.  The aim of their visit is to familiarize them with U.S. enterprises in the same industries and to seek opportunities for creative collaboration.

Lucy Liu first introduced the basic information and operational mode of Hanhai Studio.  Hanhai Studio has myriad industry resources experienced in global management and can provide U.S.-Chinese small and medium-sized enterprises with incubation services.  Hanhai Studio has also established a fund for investment in entertainment technology.

In the discussion, Lucy pointed out that Los Angeles has become the third largest start-up ecosystem in the U.S., following Silicon Valley and New York.

Global companies have opened new branches in Southern California.  Well-known universities like Cal Tech, USC and UCLA are also supporting start-up projects.  In addition, the government is promoting the development of start-up accumulation areas such as in Santa Monica, Downtown L.A., and Pasadena.

Lucy Liu mentioned that Hanhai Holdings, one of the shareholders of Hanhai Studio, has established incubation centers in the U.S., Canada, Germany and China in the past few years. It aims to build bridges to help small and medium-sized enterprises launch and scale their businesses.

A lot of delegation members said they want their companies to go global and are interested in co-operation with U.S. local business.  Hanhai Studio will pay close attention to the needs of both sides and build a communication and collaboration platform between the U.S. and China, linking talent, techniques, investment and projects together.

Enjoyor Group Delegation visits Hanhai Studio

On May 26, a delegation from Enjoyor Group visited Hanhai Studio and discussed the development of U.S.-China film technology and industries with our Hanhai team.

Enjoyor Group is the first GEM-listed enterprise in Zhejiang province, and one of the first groups of GEM-listed enterprises in all of China.  (GEM is the Growth Enterprise Market of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange.)

In the discussion, Kelly Zhang, COO of Hanhai Studio, announced that Hanhai Studio will host the first Hollywood Entertainment Technology Festival at the end of 2016.  Hanhai Studio will invite experienced scholars and experts in entertainment and industrial technology to discuss the most cutting-edge VR technology.

The CEO of Enjoyor Group, Lihong Xu said, “Nowadays entertainment and technology are more and more intertwined.  The Chinese market is so unique that it is a force to be reckoned with.”

Lihong Xu continued by saying, “The domestic market for entertainment technology is huge. If we factor in Hollywood’s storytelling expertise, there will be many possibilities in this area. If the U.S. and China work together, entertainment technology will reap much more development than technology alone.”

After the meeting, delegation members, along with Kelly Zhang and the Executive Assistant of Hanhai Holdings, Yu Yang, visited Marza Animation Planet and Reel FX Creative Studio and tried out the newest VR gear.

A Delegation from the Tianjin Binhai Hi-Tech Industrial Development Area visits Hanhai Studio

A delegation from the Tianjin Binhai Hi-Tech Industrial Development Area, led by Jihui Yin, Chairman of the administrative commission, visited Hanhai Studio on May 18.  Delegation members discussed the U.S.-China cultural creative industry with Kelly Zhang, COO of Hanhai Studio.

The Tianjin Binhai Hi-Tech Industrial Development Area is a national innovation demonstration area.  It is an important strategic backup for the collaborative development of the cities of Beijing and Tianjin, along with Hebei province.

Delegation members were very interested in the operational approaches and techniques of Hanhai Studio as a cultural creative incubator.  They welcomed Hanhai Studio to develop project match-ups between Tianjin and the U.S.  Jihui Yin remarked, “Hanhai Studio’s pattern has many advantages.  It provides a zero-distance platform for Chinese companies that want to expand their overseas markets.”

In the discussion, Jihui Yin mentioned that the film base is expected to be completed in the Tianjin Binhai Hi-Tech Development Area within three years.  It is a one-hour drive from downtown Beijing.  There will be digital studios and post-production companies located in the film base.With a comprehensive business chain, the new film base will bring together domestic resources as well as foreign companies.

Kelly Zhang also invited Tianjin Binhai Hi-Tech Industrial Development Area to attend the Hollywood Entertainment Technology Festival, which Hanhai is hosting in Los Angeles later this year, to promote communication and collaboration in the film tech industry.

Hanhai Studio attends 29 Palms Military Film Festival

The 29 Palms Military Film Festival was held in 29 Palms, California from May 13th to the 15th.  There were 24 military-themed films showcased during the festival, including contemporary Hollywood classics and documentaries.  During the three-day festival, there was also a screenplay competition, in which five outstanding screenplays were awarded recognition.

The 29 Palms Military Film Festival is organized by Basic Lead, a Los Angeles-based event production and management agency servicing the entertainment industry.  The 24 films were screened in four venues, both outdoor and indoor—Smith’s Ranch Drive-in Theater, Smith’s Ranch Auditorium, Twenty-nine Palms Junior High School, and Knott Sky Park.

In recent years, military-themed films have attracted more and more audiences.  The 29 Palms Military Film Festival brings audiences to the actual settings in the films, providing them with an unprecedented viewing experience.

Here are the five winners of the screenplay competition:

Sharing First Prize were Hollywood Marines, by Kevin Flint and Brian Flint, and City of Duskby Kimi Shearin.

Second Prize went to Sam’s War, by Stephen C. Settle from a story by Steven R. Nothem and Stephen C. Settle, and 800 As Is by Kurt Schauppner.

The Coward by Soso Whaley won Third Prize.

Kelly Zhang, COO of Hanhai Studio, attended the film festival as one of the judges.  Patrick Zuchowicki, founder and manager of film festival said, “We highly welcome Hanhai Studio to attend our festival this year and bring more military-themed films to us next year.  The Chinese film market is growing rapidly.  We are confident that our festival will attract more filmmakers from China.”

Kelly Zhang said, “Hanhai Studio is a communication platform between U.S. and Chinese cultural creative companies.  We will introduce more high-quality films to mainstream U.S. film festivals.  Me being the judge is a good start for future collaborations.”

Hanhai Studio hosts 1st Short Film Screening Day


On the afternoon of May 10th, more than 20 filmmakers working and studying in Los Angeles gathered at Hanhai Studio for our 1st Hanhai Short Film Screening Day.

Hollywood film music producer Elton Ahi, New York Film Academy Filmmaking Instructor Nick Sivakumaran, Hollywood directing and screenwriting mentor Fred Bailey, and the COO of Hanhai Studio Kelly Zhang attended the screening as judges.  They evaluated the shorts in different aspects.   Nick Sivakumara said to the young filmmakers, “As a director, your job is to tell the story.”

Four shorts were screened, and each had its own merits.

Emily, directed by NYFA student Jun Xia, combines familiar elements and excellent cinematography to create a unique horror atmosphere.

Symphony of Senses, directed by USC student Tim Wen, was greatly appreciated by the judges.  Nick Sivakumaran said Wen’s work aroused a feeling of sympathy in him.

The action film, To Survive (English title: Take Care of Yourself), directed by UCLA student Golden Zhao, focuses on the racial discrimination Asians face in the U.S.  The open ending leaves audiences with plenty of possibilities.

Beautiful World, directed by Teddy Wang, is a sci-fi film shot in China in Hunan province.  Its clever structure and original soundtrack left a deep impression on the judges and the audience.

After the screening, competitors, audience members and judges mingled and talked with each other.  The competitors said the comments given to them by the judges were very helpful and made them want to continue making films.

The Short Film Screening is part of Hanhai’s Young Filmmaker Jumpstart Program.  Hanhai Studio also provides screenplay evaluation and translation and audition room renting services.

As the first pioneering Hollywood-Chinese cultural creative and technology incubator in the U.S., Hanhai Studio provides comprehensive services to help young filmmakers complete their projects and show them to the public.  Breaking through the boundaries of language and country, Hanhai Studio aims to introduce high-quality film projects to U.S.-Chinese investors and distributors, linking talent and investors between China and the U.S.

Delegation from Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business visits Hanhai Studio

On the afternoon of May 9th, a delegation from the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business in Beijing visited Hanhai Studio and participated in a spirited discussion on U.S.-China film investment with Kelly Zhang, COO of Hanhai Studio.

The delegation members are all MBA Finance students. They come from different provinces and cities in China and are in the finance and investment industries.  Kelly Zhang introduced Hanhai Studio as the first pioneering Hollywood-Chinese creative production and technology incubator in the U.S.  Delegation members are all interested in the operations and business methods of Hanhai Studio.

In the discussion, delegation members mentioned the most profitable films are Hollywood blockbusters.  However, Chinese investors often are not exposed to these kinds of investing opportunities.  On the other hand, Hollywood blockbusters always have sufficient investing, but often meet challenges like film regulations and market shares when entering China.  Therefore, Hollywood blockbusters also need resources from China.  On the investment information asymmetry between the U.S. and China, Kelly said, “Hanhai Studio is an incubator and the bridge between two countries. We have enormous information reserves and will bring the information to both countries.”

Kelly Zhang also mentioned that Hanhai Studio has successfully hosted a recent industry panel discussion on U.S.-China Film Investment and Co-Production and the Globalization of Chinese Films during the 6th Beijing International Film Festival in April, as well as a “Night of Beijing-Hollywood” Social Mixer.  Through these two events, Hanhai Studio has agreed with Chinese investment companies to establish a fund, gathering resources from China and the U.S.  This effort will feature immediate delivery of information to investors and thus efficiently combine investment companies from both countries.

“We have learned a lot through today’s discussion,” offered the members of the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, “including the operations and methods of U.S. cultural creative companies, film financing and investment, and the future of U.S.-China co-production.”
